Sunday Dinner with Loaves and Fishes

  • Loaves and Fishes Fort Pierce provides meals and other support for homeless and food-insecure neighbors in Fort Pierce, Florida.
  • We also offer a free commissary with clothing, outdoor living essentials and personal hygiene products.
  • When requested, we assign advocates. Advocates help homeless persons with disabilities navigate government bureaucracy to apply for benefits for which they qualify.
  • Currently, we serve a free Sunday Dinner at 11:30 AM in the parking area for 5 Star Automotive at 515 N 4th Street (US 1), Fort Pierce FL 34950; corner of US 1 and Cedar Place. Our meals are prepared in volunteer home kitchens and brought to the site in containers provided, served cafeteria-style.  We serve under the building carport. We thank the owners of 5 Star Car Repair for allowing us to use their property each Sunday.
  • During the meal, REACH Outreach also sponsors a free commissary for these neighbors to provide clothing, outdoor living essentials and personal hygiene products. This commissary is supported by donations from area churches and the St Lucie County community.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am concerned about liability. Can I be sued while volunteering?

RE: Liability :  Florida Statue protects us from criminal and civil lawsuits in accordance with Federal law providing the same protection to non-profit organizations that provide food for free. Nonprofit organizations distributing free food are primarily protected by the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, which provides federal immunity from civil and criminal liability. This law protects organizations distributing “apparently wholesome” food in good faith, even if it causes harm, except in cases of gross negligence or intentional misconduct.

The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act (Federal): Protects nonprofits, businesses, and individuals from liability when donating or distributing food to the needy.

Food Donation Improvement Act of 2022: Expands these protections to allow nonprofits to charge a small fee for food to cover handling costs and protects direct donations to individuals.

State Laws: All 50 states have additional liability protections, with some offering broader coverage than federal law.

Do a Google search for “Legal protection for nonprofit organization that provides free food” to find a variety of government and NGO’s citing the applicable laws protecting us.  We never charge for meals or any of our services.  We do accept donations and occasionally get them from the people we serve.
